Special Grass Species

The Kentucky bluegrass , perennial ryegrass and the fine fescues are the species most commonly used for lawns in northern Illinois. Other grass species for specific situations but are also used , and promoted , . Examples elongated fescue, creeping bentgrass , buffalo grass , zoysia grass, trivalis poa annual grass and ray included .

The elongated fescue ( tall fescue ) tolerates heat and wear. Latest fescue cultivars elongate , called elongated type fescue lawn , have a much improved compared with previous appearance fescue . However, resistance to winter conditions has not yet been resolved. The elongated fescue seedling grows as why not recovered once it has been damaged. Tall fescue is suitable for hot, dry places, but under the circumstances require periodic reseeding to maintain quality standards . The elongated fescue is full sun but tolerates some shade .

The buffalo grass ( buffalograss ), although drought resistant and grows slowly , is not ideal for very exposed turf grass. The buffalo grass in large areas does not require much care . Its appearance is poor and also takes to settle . Buffalo grass is a warm season grass , which means he has a short period of active growth in northern Illinois. Currently on the market there are new buffalo grass cultivars of which several are being used successfully in northern Illinois.

The zoysia grass ( zoysiagrass ) , other warm-season grass , remains dormant ( beige color) for most of the season in northern Illinois. For this reason, it is not recommended for home gardens . The zoysia grass has rhizomes and stolons that form a pattern of dense grass and plant debris quickly . The grass is slow soysia property. This grass tolerates heat well and droughts as is often touted in advertisements for magazines.

The trivalis poa (rough bluegrass ) is well adapted to moist and shady places . His appearance as grass is poor and when mixed with other grasses is messy and confused with weeds. Leaves and stolons of this grass are fine .

The ray annual grass (annual ryegrass ) is not recommended for short-lived species lawn . Its ideal use is as quick and temporary bare soil coverage and fast germinating .
